Sottomarina di Chioggia (Veneto): what to see

post-title

What to see in Sottomarina di Chioggia, an itinerary including the main places of interest, from the promenade with the free beach to the historic center of Chioggia, easily accessible via the Union Bridge.

Tourist information

Sottomarina is a seaside resort located on the long strip of land that divides the extreme southern edge of the Venetian lagoon from the Adriatic Sea, in the stretch that goes from the mouth of the port of San Felice to the mouth of the Brenta river.

Together with the towns of Borgo San Giovanni and Brondolo, Sottomarina forms a single urban center with Chioggia, to which it is connected via the Union bridge, which straddles the stretch of lagoon called Laguna del Lusenzo, located between Chioggia and Sottomarina.

Sottomarina stands on the territory where Chioggia Minore was once located, destroyed by the Genoese during the war against Venice, which took place between 1378 and 1381.

Its reconstruction took place in the mid-eighteenth century, when the Serenissima Republic of Venice created the grandiose work of the Murazzi.

It is a wall made with large stone rocks, located along the coast, in order to preserve the entire lagoon basin from the open sea.

Today the resort has a beautiful promenade, many green spaces, cycle paths and above all a long and wide beach, appreciated for the quality of its sand.

What see

The nearby historic center of Chioggia is very attractive and full of suggestive views, connected to the mainland by the Long Bridge.

Its particular urban herringbone-shaped structure is formed by the vertical lines of the square, the Corso del Popolo and the canals, which intersect with the horizontal ones of the streets, characterized by arcades on one side and on the opposite side by the warehouses for the deposit of fishing gear, reachable from the canals with boats.

The innermost canal is the Vena canal, crossed by nine bridges, including the Ponte Vigo, the most artistic and the most beautiful of all, after which, through the Calle di Santa Croce, you reach another bridge, that of San Domenico, which leads to the homonymous church located on the islet dedicated to the same saint.

Corso del Popolo develops parallel to Canal Vena, the main street of the historic center of Chioggia, through which you can reach various monuments, including the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, the Church of San Martino, the Municipal Palace, the Loggia dei Bandi , the Church of San Giacomo and the Church of Sant'Andrea, in the district of the same name, with the nearby bell tower and its fascinating medieval clock.
