post-title

What to see in Subiaco, an itinerary including the main monuments and places of interest of the ancient medieval village, including the Borgia abbey fortress and the San Francesco church.

Tourist information

Located in a dominant position in the Aniene valley, above a rocky outcrop, Subiaco is an ancient village of the late medieval era.

Immersed in a touristically appreciated territory, thanks to the presence of many important attractions from the historical and artistic point of view, as well as naturalistic, the historic center of Subiaco is dominated by the remarkable size of the Rocca Abbaziale and contains ancient monuments that have made it included in the list of the most beautiful villages in Italy.

In Subiaco there are the Benedictine monasteries of Santa Scolastica and San Benedetto, the latter also known as Sacro Speco.

In addition, the area is included in the Regional Natural Park of the Simbruini Mountains, a green area that is distinguished by the presence of extensive beech woods and meadows, as well as rivers and mountains with heights of up to two thousand meters.

In this religious and landscape context, these places can offer, to those who wish, great emotions in the complete isolation made available by a still wild natural environment.

Since the times of ancient Rome, various historical figures, famous saints and hermits have been recalled from these places attracted by their irresistible beauty.

What see

In the historic center of Subiaco you can admire various buildings as well as visit the abbey fortress, of medieval origin but widely reworked between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

Also known as Rocca dei Borgia, for being the first home of Lucrezia, the Rocca Abbaziale is able to tell the story of the populations that have followed one another over the centuries in these places.

From its gardens it is possible to enjoy a unique panorama over the Aniene Valley, while in the noble floors it is possible to admire important pictorial cycles and decorations.

Not far from the center is the Church of San Francesco, dating back to 1327 and featuring a beautiful interior containing altars made of wood, as well as fine 15th and 16th century paintings.

The Churches of Sant'Andrea, restored by Florestano Di Fausto after the damage suffered during the Second World War, and Santa Maria della Valle, located in the center of Subiaco, represent, together with the Church of Santa Scolastica, one of the best examples of the Italian neoclassicism.
