City of the province of Viterbo in Lazio, Tarquinia is located on a hill at 132 meters above sea level, surrounded by a territory of great landscape and archaeological interest.

The ancient Etruscan city was located on the Civita hill, a few kilometers east of the current city built in the Middle Ages, on a settlement that originated in the period of the fall of the Roman Empire, when the inhabitants of Tarquinia, from the nearby hill they moved there and called the inhabited area Cornietum.


An extraordinary testimony of the city of Tarquinia, which arose between the tenth and eighth centuries BC, is represented by the vast Etruscan necropolis of the Monterozzi, an archaeological area that includes a large number of painted Etruscan tombs, essential for understanding, through the numerous images, the evolution of Etruscan civilization.

The Tomb of the leopards deserves a special mention, dating back to 473 BC, which consists of a funerary monument with a rectangular plan and a double-pitched roof with a beam on the ridge, accessible via tunnel and steps, the name derives from the representation of two leopards from the large jaws positioned around a tree, the site has been recognized by UNESCO as a world heritage site for the precious testimony provided regarding the Etruscan period.

What see

Of the medieval aspect of the city, the surrounding walls, the numerous towers, the ancient palaces and the churches of extraordinary beauty are immediately evident.

In the historic center is the Tarquiniense National Archaeological Museum, better known as the Etruscan museum, which is housed in the Palazzo Vitelleschi, an architectural masterpiece of the Renaissance made by Cardinal Giovanni Vitelleschi, between 1436 and 1439, designed by Giovanni Dalmata.

Along the coast there are the seaside resorts of Lido di Tarquinia, Marina Velca and the Reserve of the former Saline.
