Tarvisio (Friuli Venezia Giulia): what to see

post-title

What to see in Tarvisio, itinerary including the main monuments and places of interest, including the Parish Church, Laghi Fusine, Mangart and the Sanctuary of Monte Lussari.

Tourist information

Location in the province of Udine, from which it is 91 km away, Tarvisio is located at the north-eastern end of Italy, in a vast basin of the upper Val Canale, near the Slizza stream, a few kilometers away from the borders Austrian and Slovenian.

Tarvisio is a popular summer and winter sports resort.

The origins of the inhabited center date back to Roman times, in the Middle Ages it became a possession of the bishops of Bamberg who, in 1456, established an annual fair and contributed to the diffusion of the processing of iron extracted in the area.

It was partially destroyed by the Turks in the fifteenth century, later it was involved in several battles at the time of the Napoleonic war, including the one won in 1797 under the guidance of General Massena.

What see

Among the places to visit is the parish church of Saints Peter and Paul, built in the fifteenth century and subsequently reworked several times, which testifies to the high degree of influence derived from the dominion of the bishops of Bamberg.

On the facade of the church there is a large fresco depicting San Cristoforo, flanked by a mullioned window and a portico with Gothic arches.

Inside you can admire various wooden works, including statues and choir stalls, tear-off frescoes by local artists, dating back to the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, as well as eighteenth-century tablets depicting Saints and Angels.

In the surroundings, 10 km away, there are the two lakes of Fusine, located near the Slovenian border.

Absolutely not to be missed is the lower lake for its particular blue-green color and the remarkable contrast with the white walls of the Mangart, a mountain of the Julian Alps 2677 meters high.

The Sanctuary of Monte Lussari, reachable by cable car from Valbruna, a hamlet located 5 km from Tarvisio, was built in 1360 at 1790 meters above sea level and constitutes a destination for pilgrimages.
