post-title

What to see in Tindari, itinerary including the main monuments and places of interest, including Sanctuary, Roman Villa, Greek Theater and Archaeological Museum.

Tourist information

One of the last Greek colonies in Sicily, Tindari was founded by Dionysius with the name of Tyndaris in 396 BC.

If you look at the archaeological excavations of ancient Tindari, we have the image of a city with straight and parallel streets, along which houses and shops stood, equipped with an efficient sewage system located below the road level.

Excavating, a Greek Theater, a Basilica and the Baths were also found.

Of the Basilica, probably once used as a meeting place, originally a three-storey building with a total height of 15 meters, only the lower floor is preserved, the upper floors were accessible via external stairs.

The thermal baths, dating back to the third century BC, have changing rooms embellished with floors made of beautiful mosaics as soon as you enter the entrance. Follow the room of the frigidarium with the tub and that of the calidarium equipped with a system used for the circulation of hot air.

What see

Not far from the thermal baths it is possible to admire the remains of a Roman Villa dating back to the 1st century BC.

The building opens around the four sides of the peristyle, each of which has 8 columns.

The reception room, called the tablium, has painted walls and inlaid marble floors.

The ancient city is surrounded by a circle of walls, built in various historical periods, between the second and fifth centuries BC, with 5 almost intact towers, of which the two highest were placed to defend the main city gate.

Today there is a museum in Tindari in whose rooms archaeological materials and works of art from the Greek and Roman periods are collected.
