A citizen of Portugal, Tomar developed around the walls of the castle above, erected by the religious congregation of the Templars who made it their home in the twelfth century.
At the time of the Arab incursions, which affected the territory between the Douro river and the Tagus, this fortress played a very important role in sighting and defense.

The Convent of Christ was declared a World Heritage Site in 1983.
