Trieste (Friuli Venezia Giulia): what to see in 1 day

post-title

What to see in Trieste, one-day itinerary including the main monuments and places of interest, including Miramare Castle, Piazza Unità d’Italia and Cathedral of San Giusto.

Tourist information

Trieste, the capital of Friuli Venezia Giulia, is located in the innermost and eastern part of the Gulf of the same name, on the Adriatic Sea near the border with Slovenia.

The city extends amphitheatrically from the coast to the slopes of the karst reliefs that lie behind it.

On Trieste, squeezed between sea and land, the Bora arrives suddenly and impetuously, blowing on a border town, rich in different cultures and a gateway to the Slavic countries, culturally open to Europe.

Important commercial node since ancient times, it was especially under the Habsburgs that Trieste and its port experienced a great development, especially with the establishment of the free port in 1719, which made it a privileged intermediary for the trades that concerned the Indies, the Italy, Germany and Northern Europe.

What see

The nineteenth-century buildings, which line up along the shore, testify to this prestigious past, such as the magnificent Miramare Castle, built for Maximilian of Austria at the end of a promontory, surrounded by a large Italian garden.

Inside there is a remarkable patrimony of furniture, porcelain, ivory and paintings, which represent one of the most significant examples of princely residence typical of the second half of the nineteenth century.

Piazza dell'Unità d’Italia, open towards the sea like a stage with the facade of the Town Hall as a background, is the main square of Trieste.

On the top of the San Giusto hill stands the Cathedral of the same name, the main monument and symbol of the city, the result of the union of two previous Romanesque basilicas in the fourteenth century.
