Located on a hill at 300 meters above sea level, in a panoramic position on the plain of Grosseto, between the Rigo and Sovata streams, Vetulonia is a fraction of the municipality of Castiglione della Pescaia.

Behind the Romanesque parish church, dedicated to Saints Simon and Jude, remodeled over the centuries and having a majestic bell tower, the medieval nucleus and the remains of the polygonal walls, dating back to the sixth and fifth centuries BC are still visible.

The necropolis, which occupies a large area of ​​territory, is of considerable importance especially for the tumulus tombs, of ancient origin as they date back to the seventh century BC .., gathered in five burial grounds.

The best example of this type of tombs is the tumulus of the Pietrera, located about 3 km away, characterized by an access corridor and a sepulchral cell divided into several rooms and covered by a pseudocupola.


What see

Going further down is the Diavolino mound, having a quadrangular cell, pseudocupola and crowning drum.

Where the inhabited center begins, the museum is located which preserves the objects that came to light following the excavations carried out in the area.

The Oratory of Santa Maria delle Grazie in via della Madonna, dating back to the fifteenth century and featuring a simple gabled façade, preserves inside a remarkable fresco depicting the Madonna and Child between Saints Fabiano and Sebastiano, dating back to the period of construction of the church but repainted in 1909 by Casucci on behalf of Teresa Guidi.

The Abbey of San Bartolomeo in Sestinga, built in the eleventh century on the knoll of Badia Vecchia, but then rebuilt in the following century in the locality called "Il Convento", was first a Benedictine monastery of considerable importance, later it passed to the Augustinian hermitans, before starting a phase of decline, some remains of the original structure are visible.

The Chapel of the Scala Santa, located on the slopes of the hill of Vetulonia in the locality of the same name, was built in 1935 at the behest of the Renzetti family.
