Via degli Abruzzi: history of the itinerary between Florence and Naples

post-title

The Via degli Abruzzi has long been the main axis of communication between Florence and Naples, a historic route that crosses the central Abruzzo Apennines.

Tourist information

Much of the history of Italy unfolds along the Via degli Abruzzi, since in the past this road axis was at the center of numerous cultural and commercial exchanges, military operations, diplomatic and religious missions, which contributed to animate the life of villages and cities involved, making them strategic points of extraordinary importance.

Over the centuries, this route has seen numerous Florentine merchants, Angevin and Aragonese kings, as well as groups of artisans who went from the north to the south in search of work; the Savoy army also followed this road route when it was to reunite with Garibaldi near Teano.

Very interesting route, which reveals an Italy rich in traditions and history: the Via degli Abruzzi was born to join the Sabina to the Sannio, passing through the region of the highlands and connecting the Northern Etruscans with the Greek-Etruscans of Campania.

Along the Via degli Abruzzi you will find cities enclosed in the mountains with a rich cultural heritage, among which Cittaducale, Sulmona, Castel di Sangro, L’Aquila, Popoli and Isernia deserve to be remembered.

Later, under the domination of Rome, the Via Tiburtina Valeria Claudia was built, which partially diminished the importance of the Via degli Abruzzi.

After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the Via degli Abruzzi regained great importance due to a new increase in commercial and military traffic, as well as a renewed logistical importance which further increased in the Angevin age.
