Built on the southwestern side of the Roccamorfina massif, Sessa Aurunca was the largest city of the Aurunci in the eighth century BC, when it had the name of Suessa, and in 312 BC. became a Roman colony.
During the period of the Roman emperors, remarkable buildings were erected.
After it was dominated by the Church for a short time, in the tenth century it was ceded to Charles of Anjou and became a fiefdom of several families.
The Cathedral dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, built in the twelfth century and remodeled in the eighteenth century, is characterized by the use of recycled material taken from Roman buildings.
In the porticoed façade are preserved reliefs regarding the life of St. Peter, also the large decorated window and the central portal deserve particular attention.
What see
The interior has three naves, divided by columns with Roman capitals, with a mosaic floor from the 13th century in the central nave.
In the rectangular pulpit, a geometric mosaic decoration with animal figures stands out.
Along the ring road of Sessa Aurunca there are the remains of a large Roman theater, characterized by an extensive cryptoporticus that runs around, and those of the Baths.
In a dominant position is the Ducal Castle with its tower.
At about 3 km there is the Ponte degli Aurunci, which is an imposing and suggestive Roman monument, made up of 21 arches and made of brick.
