post-title

What to see in Cirò Marina, an itinerary including the main monuments and places of interest, including the Temple of Apollo Aleo, the Carafa Castle, the civic archaeological museum and the Punta Alice beach.

Tourist information

Located near Punta Alice, on the Calabrian coast in the province of Crotone, Cirò Marina is a seaside resort washed by the Ionian Sea.

The origins of the town are very ancient, as evidenced by some archaeological finds capable of proving the presence of human settlements in the area since the Bronze Age.

The remains of the temple of Apollo Aleo, located behind the Punta Alice lighthouse, testify to the contact of local populations with the Greek people of the Mycenaeans.

In the temple, which dates back to the fifth century BC, various objects were found, including pottery, utensils in common use, a gilded statuette, as well as some interesting remains of a statue of Apollo made of marble.

The historic center of Cirò is located on the hills, which rise rising towards the interior of the coast.

What see

The ancient village is surrounded by a wall and includes the Carafa castle, with a quadrangular plan and dating back to the fifteenth century.

To visit the small Civic Museum, where objects from excavations conducted in the area are preserved.

Very popular is the Punta Alice beach with golden colored sand and surrounded by dunes and olive trees.

Cirò is renowned for the production of wines, as well as for the sardella, a typical gastronomic product with a spicy taste, to be prepared using small anchovies or, in shortages, sardines, as well as red pepper and wild fennel.
