post-title

What to see in Pontebba, itinerary including the main monuments and places of interest, including the Pieve di Santa Maria Maggiore, as well as interesting excursions on the Austrian side.

Tourist information

Located in the province of Udine, from which it is 68 km away, Pontebba is the commercial center of Carnia and a renowned holiday location, located at the mouth of the Val Canale, at the point where the Pontebbana stream flows into the Fella.

It is a starting point for ascents and ski excursions on the Austrian side, from whose border, at the Pramollo pass at 1522 meters above sea level, it is only 12 km away.

The news of the first human settlements dates back to prehistoric times, after which the area became, starting from the Roman period, a commercial transit station towards the transalpine regions.

From the Middle Ages to the eighteenth century it belonged to the abbey of Moggio, in 1342 an annual fair was established at the behest of the patriarch of Aquileia.

What see

The inhabited center was completely rebuilt after the serious damage reported during the Second World War following the bombing.

Among the main monuments it is worth mentioning the Gothic Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, located beyond the railway near the Pontebbana stream.

Built in 1504 the church is flanked by a mighty bell tower with three-light windows, inside there is a remarkable golden wooden altar, made by Wolfang Haller, a famous Austrian engraver, and a canvas depicting the Madonna with Saints Rocco and Sebastiano, work of 1624 performed by Palma the Younger.

Nearby, 6 km away, is Bagni di Lusnizza, one of the first spa resorts in the area to have developed in the tourism sector.
