December 1: saint of the day, name day

post-title

The Saint of the 1st December is Sant’Eligio, which name day is celebrated and other saints who are celebrated on this date.

Eligius

Belonging to a family of low social backgrounds, Eligio learned the profession of goldsmith by practicing in the workshop of Abbone, who was considered among the best goldsmith experts, for this reason he was in turn in a position to become a great artist in the sector.

The great skill, combined with an unquestionable honesty, earned him the attentions of King Clotario II, who commissioned him a golden throne, providing him with the necessary metal from which Eligio managed to obtain even two thrones.

He later obtained the post of director of the Mint of Marseille and received further missions of trust from the new king Dagobert.

In addition, Eligio carried out other works on his own initiative, including that of redeeming prisoners of war at his own expense and that of founding monasteries, including that of Solignac in 632.

In 639, after the death of the sovereign, he chose to devote himself to religious life, becoming bishop of Noyon-Tournai in 641.

Thus began for him a period of his life totally different from the past, dedicated to carrying out an evangelization work in Northern Gaul, in the Meuse regions and in the islands of Friesland.

Egidio ended his life on Dutch soil in 660, in the full development of his important work dedicated to God.

From Holland his remains were moved to Noyon in 1952, but his cult immediately spread to France, Germany and Italy.

He was declared patron of goldsmiths and all metal craftsmen.
