San Liberato
Liberated lived in the second half of the third century AD, he died a martyr victim of persecution against Christians by Roman emperors.
Liberato is believed to have been a military man, and most likely, an honor guard of the emperor.
When he became a Christian, he gave up his career and devoted himself completely to following Christ, recognizing him as his Lord, instead of the state and the emperor.
For this he was sentenced to death, his martyrdom took place in Rome, in the area where the Monteverde district is located today, near the Catacombs of San Ponziano in which he was buried.
In 1780 the remains of San Liberato martire were brought to the church of San Giacomo Maggiore in Roccamandolfi, in the province of Isernia, since the Duchess Anna Pignatelli, lady of these lands, asked Pope Pius VI for the relics of a saint to be venerated, for this reason the relics of San Liberato are found in the main altar of this church.
In 1794, the bishop of Boiano made arrangements for the feast of San Liberato to take place on the first Sunday of June, coinciding with the transhumance, the date on which Roccamandolfi is still celebrated today.
