Dominated by the ancient medieval village, Grottammare is one of the best known seaside resorts on the coast in the province of Ascoli Piceno.

The town, whose origins date back to the year one thousand, represented for several centuries the battlefield between Fermo and Ascoli Piceno, who competed for control of the area.


The Church of Sant'Agostino, located at the entrance of the upper village, dates back to the sixteenth century and retains an interesting fresco from 1577, made by Vincenzo Pagani.

The Church of Santa Lucia, dating from the late sixteenth century, was built on a project by architect Domenico Fontana.

What see

In the highest part of the village is the Castle of Grottammare, dating back to the fourteenth century.


Among the excursions to do in the surrounding area, there is the one in Ripatransone, a hilltop center ideal for summer holidays, which has preserved the ancient medieval walls.

Became the first free rural municipality in 1205, in the following centuries it was the subject of contention between the Malatesta and the Sforza.

The Cathedral of the late sixteenth century, the Palazzo del Podestà from the fourteenth century and the Palazzo Comunale, rebuilt at the end of the seventeenth century, where the archaeological museum is housed, deserve attention.

In the Palazzo Bonomi-Gera, built at the end of the seventeenth century, there are a plaster cast gallery and an art gallery.
