Santa Agnese

Lived in the 4th century, Agnese was a defenseless victim of the persecution of Diocletian when she was only twelve years old.

The story of his martyrdom manages to move the hearts of even the most insensitive.

The son of the prefect of Rome had fallen in love with her, but was promptly rejected by the girl.

Then he asked Father Sinfronio how he could do it and this advised him to report it to the authorities as a Christian.

The young suitor tried to threaten Agnese but, seeing her adamant, he decided to hand her over to his father who, furious with anger, had her put in a brothel.

But Agnese was not sexually violated, as miraculously the only man who tried to get her hands on him was stricken with illness and inexplicably fell dead at his feet.

The intent to kill her did not disappear even in the face of that prodigy, in fact they still tried to convince Agnese to deny her Christian faith, but in vain, then orders were given to cut her head using the sword.

Even today, in the basilica of Santa Agnese, located on the Via Nomentana, on the morning of January 21, two lambs, a symbol of candor, are blessed and offered to the Pope so that with their wool the sacred vestments destined for the archbishops are woven.
