What to see at the Santuario della Corona, because it is called this way, history and statue of the Madonna, how to get there on foot along the Path of Hope or by shuttle bus from Spiazzi.
Tourist information
In Veneto, in the province of Verona perched on Monte Baldo in Spiazzi, there is the Madonna della Corona Sanctuary.
The name of the Crown derives from the mountains that surround it which, forming a crown, were named in this way.
This place of worship, dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows, therefore fits into a beautiful landscape, with a church inserted in a small clearing carved into the rock wall, overlooking the Adige valley.
The statue of the Madonna, made of local painted stone, represents the Virgin of Sorrows who supports and contemplates the crucified Son deposed by the cross.
On the Balbo already around the second half of the thirteenth century there was a monastery and a chapel dedicated to Santa Maria di Montebaldo, reachable through a narrow and narrow path in the rock.
Between 1434 and 1437 Santa Maria di Montebaldo became the property of the Knights of San Giovanni, or of the Holy Sepulcher, who transformed the monastery and chapel into a sanctuary equipped with access routes.
In the following centuries the church was subject to further enlargements and embellishments, up to the current Basilica built thanks to the works carried out from 1975 to 1978, concerning the demolition of the existing church, except for some important parts, and the construction of a larger building .
In 1982 the Sanctuary assumed the title minor basilica, while in the spring of 1988 it was visited by Pope John Paul II, who prayed intensely to the Madonna della Corona.
How to get
In some periods of the year, to reach the Sanctuary, there is the possibility of using a shuttle bus service that departs from Spiazzi.
A path much appreciated by hikers and visitors is the path of Hope, which from Brentino Belluno reaches the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Corona.

About two and a half kilometers long and characterized by a difference in height of about 600 meters, the path is entirely passable with about 2 hours of walking, passing through the woods until you reach a staircase carved into the rock that leads under the church.
Scala Santa
Inside the Sanctuary is the Scala Santa, a reproduction of the staircase found in Rome near the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano.
