Maine is part of New England, a geographical area located in the northeastern part of the United States of America, washed by the Atlantic Ocean to the south and bordered to the north-east-west with Canada and to the south-west with New Hampshire .
Divided into 16 counties, Maine has an area of over 86000 square kilometers, its capital is Augusta.
Much of the territory is mountainous, with the north-west area occupied by an extension of the White Mountains, which fall within the Appalachian mountain range, which includes Mount Katahdin, which is the highest peak in Maine.
Along the southern coastal strip there are extensive plains, with sandy beaches and jagged coasts from which you can see various islands, including that of Mount Desert.
The Aroostook plateau, which constitutes the northern part of the country, is characterized by a particularly fertile soil, exploited largely for the cultivation of potatoes, also in its southern end there are numerous rivers, including Saint Croix, Penobscot, Kennebec and Salmon Falls.
There are also several lakes including Moosehead, Sebago, Chesuncook, Chamberlain and Grande Rangeley.
The climate of this state is generally cool all year round, including the summer period during which days with high temperatures never occur.
The economy is mainly focused on agriculture, especially with the cultivation of potatoes, cereals, vegetables and fruit.
Cattle breeding and fishing are also very popular.
Natural resources include forests, exploited for the production of timber, and the subsoil, which provides various materials useful for construction.

The main cities are Augusta, Portland, Lewiston, Bangor, South Portland, Biddeford and Waterville.

Portland, located in southern Maine, is the city with the largest population, bordering on South Portland, Westbrok, Falmouth and Casco Bay.
Bangor is the county seat of Penobscot, South Portland is located in the county of Cumberland, Biddeford is the largest center of York County and home to the University of New England, Waterville belongs to the county of Kennebec.
