San Crispino

Born in Viterbo on 13 November 1668 and died in Rome on 19 May 1750, Crispino da Viterbo was an Italian religious, proclaimed blessed by Pius VII on 7 September 1806 and made a saint under the pontificate of Pope John Paul II on 20 June 1982.

Pietro Fioretti, this was his name before becoming a friar, spent the first years of his life in a family with serious economic problems, for this reason he had to enter his uncle Francesco's artisan workshop as a teenager, being the father dead when he was still young.

After a Carmelite father took care of him, he was able to attend Jesuit schools and when he turned twenty-five he entered the Order of Capuchin Friars, taking the name of Fra Crispino, patron of shoemakers.

After making his vows, in 1694 he joined the Tolfa convent as a cook.

In that place, his first miracle took place, which caused the healing of a woman suffering from a serious form of contagious flu, for which the doctors had given no chance of survival.

So it was that his reputation as a thaumaturge spread like wildfire, so much so that it was decided by his superiors to move to Rome in 1697.

In the eternal city, Fra Crispino fell ill with tuberculosis and was hospitalized in the Roman castle of Albano, where he received various visits by Pope Clement XI, during the period in which the Pope was staying in Castel Gandolfo.

He was sent to Monterotondo, where he stayed for a few years, then he arrived in Orvieto in 1709.

Here he devoted himself to the collection of daily alms and to the assistance works addressed to the sick of a hospice located a few kilometers from Orvieto, where numerous healings that could not be explained scientifically took place and were therefore considered miraculous.

Among other things, he also took care of the infants abandoned in front of the convent door, he also had a habit of keeping a behavior full of joy and playful towards his neighbor, a very open and sociable character that, in addition to the numerous positive effects, it also caused him a good deal of trouble.
