post-title

What to see in Minturno, itinerary including the main monuments and places of interest, including the Baronial Castle, the Church of San Pietro and the Church of the Annunciation.

Tourist information

Located on the slopes of the Aurunci Mountains, in a dominant position on the Garigliano plain, Minturno dates back to pre-Roman times, later it was subjected to Rome, which wanted to take advantage of its particular strategic position on the Via Appia and the port on the Garigliano river.

After a period of decline due to a malaria epidemic, Minturno became part of the papal possessions and was subsequently dominated by various lordships.

The Baronial Castle, located in a central position with respect to the fortification walls, was erected in the twelfth century.

The Church of San Pietro, dating back to the eleventh century and reworked several times over the course of time, is characterized by a facade preceded by a staircase and a portico, where the base of the Romanesque bell tower is inserted.

Inside the three naves, decorated with frescoes and stuccos, there is a 1200 pulpit and a candlestick used to hold the Easter candle.

In the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, in baroque style, there is a canvas made by the students of the Sabatino.

What see

The Church of the Annunciation, dating back to the fourteenth century, is distinguished by the remarkable paintings on the walls of the late Gothic and Renaissance periods.

In the surroundings, about 5 km away, are the ruins of Minturnae, which include the towered, pre-Roman and Roman walls, the large Augustan theater, part of the Republican forum and three temples, including the Capitolium.

Not far away are the forum of the imperial period, with the remains of spas and a basilica, as well as an amphitheater.

At the locality called "Le Grotte", there are some ruins that testify where the river port was located, equipped with shops and docks.
