St. Virgil of Salzburg

Virgil of Salzburg was born around 700 from an Irish noble family with the name of Feirgil.

In his life he was abbot of Aghabo, as well as esteemed surveyor and astronomer.

In about 743 he left Ireland to go to France, where he was welcomed by King Pippin the Short.

After two years spent in Cressy, near Compiegne, he moved to Bavaria, invited by Duke Odilo who appointed him bishop of Salzburg in 748.

He undertook a long controversy with Bonifacio, who was concerned with evangelizing Germany, since a priest, not knowing Latin, had baptized a child using an incorrect formula, saying in the name of the fatherland instead of in the name of the Father.

For this reason Boniface canceled the baptism, attracting criticism from Virgil, who for his part considered the administered sacrament valid, obtaining the support of Zechariah on the subject.

A few years later, to take revenge, Boniface accused Virgil of instigating Duke Odilo against him and of supporting the existence of the Earth's antipodes, or of believing that, in addition to the northern hemisphere, there was also the southern one, which extended from the line of the equator to Antarctica, motivating his criticisms with the fact that this theory was not confirmed by the Scriptures.

St. Zacharias did not fail to provide his opinion on this matter as well, by sending a letter to Boniface on 1 May 748 where he said to expel Virgil from the Church, revoking the priesthood, if he persevered with the intention of wanting to spread these theories despite a their eventual proven groundlessness.

Staying out of these controversies, Bishop Virgil continues his work in Salzburg aimed particularly at religious education and bringing help to the poor with the help of monks.

In Salzburg he had the cathedral built, as a stable community meeting place, where he was buried when he died on November 27, 784.

After about four hundred years after his death, after the cathedral had been destroyed by fire, his coffin was found during the rubble removal work.

Following this event, there was a feeling that Virgil had just died, then rumors began to spread about his alleged miracles and people gathered in prayer, bringing to the foreground the figure of the bishop of Salzburg whose insistent request was made. canonization.

In 1230 the sanctification process was started, collecting the necessary testimonies to be sent to Rome.

It was Pope Gregory IX who proclaimed Bishop Virgil Saint in 1233 and, later, in 1740, his name was officially included in the Roman Martyrology.
