What to see in Ostuni, itinerary to visit the white city, including the main monuments and places of interest, including the ancient village, the Cathedral and the Marina.
Tourist information
Located on three heights of the Murge, not far from the Adriatic coast, Ostuni is an evocative medieval village, where the Messapi, an ancient Illyrian population settled in the area, once lived.
It was subjected to various dominations, first to the Norman one, then to Lecce, Taranto and Bari, the latter in the first half of the sixteenth century.
Later it belonged to families of Spanish nobles.
The oldest part, characterized by typical white houses, is perched on the highest hill among those above which the town develops.
With an ovoid perimeter, it has a high medieval structure and includes some portions of the ancient Angevin walls.
What see
The fifteenth-century Cathedral has a remarkable late-Gothic facade, while a series of arches characterizes the entire perimeter of the church.
The central rose window and the carved portals are very interesting.
In the surroundings it is advisable to visit Carovigno, about 8 km away, located in the place where ancient Carbina stood, an interesting town in Messapia, of which you can still see parts of the walls and the fifteenth-century castle.
Marina di Ostuni, located 7 km away, is a famous seaside holiday resort, characterized by long rocky stretches including splendid inlets.
Another interesting excursion is the one to Ceglie Messapico, an ancient Messapian center with an austere castle built in 1525.
