Pieve di Cadore (Veneto): what to see

post-title

What to see in Pieve di Cadore, itinerary to visit the country where Titian was born, including the square named after the famous painter and his birthplace, as well as interesting excursions to do in the surrounding area.

Tourist information

Located in the Cadore dolomite area, between Colle Montericco and Col Contras, Pieve di Cadore is a holiday resort in the province of Belluno, from which it is 43 km away.

In this country of Roman origins, the painter Tiziano Vecello was born, the protagonist of the Italian Renaissance.

In Piazza Tiziano, where there is the monument dedicated to the famous painter, made by Del Dotto in the nineteenth century, the main buildings overlook.

The Palazzo della Magnifica Cadorina Community, built in the sixteenth century on the site where a previous building once stood, houses the Cadore museum, which houses interesting Roman and Paleo-Venetian archaeological finds, as well as a series of Renaissance relics and works by local artists.

In the parish church, rebuilt in 1800 on the remains of an ancient medieval construction, there are remarkable paintings, including a Madonna and Child with Saints, in addition to the Pala Genova, both by Titian.

What see

In the apse there is the Last Supper by Cesare Vecello, while in the sacristy there are four remarkable sixteenth-century altar doors, the work of students of the German-Flemish school.

Nearby is Titian's birthplace, where documents, memorabilia and various reproductions of Cesare Vecello's works are kept.

On the left side is the Vallenzasca house, a building with a facade most likely frescoed by Titian.

Nearby, about 3 km, is Calalzo di Cadore, a holiday resort from where the road to Crea begins, which can be traveled on foot in about an hour and a half, an isolated village located on a spur of rock in a panoramic position, with the small church of San Leonardo, in Gothic-Renaissance style.

A recommended excursion is the one in Vigo di Cadore, a picturesque alpine center 14 km away, located on a plateau in the upper Piave valley, where the 14th century Church of Sant’Orsola is located.
