Scanno (Abruzzo): what to see in the village

post-title

What to see in Scanno, itinerary including the main monuments and places of interest, including the Church of Santa Maria della Valle and the Wool Museum.

Tourist information

Considered one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, Scanno is located within the Abruzzo National Park, in the upper Sagittario Valley at 1050 meters above sea level.

The historic center has an evident medieval aspect, with small streets and alleys, where the buildings with their ancient portals overlook.

Certainly worth a visit is the Church of Santa Maria della Valle, on whose facade a beautiful 14th century portal opens.

Also known as the Church of the Madonna Assunta, the cult building has an interior with three naves, while the exterior, in the Romanesque style of Abruzzo, is made with local stone.

On the facade there are three portals with as many rose windows above, the largest of which is the central one.

In the first internal columns you can see traces of medieval frescoes, while in the presbytery there is a polychrome altar and a carved wooden choir.

The confessionals and the pulpit, both made of wood, are the work of Ferdinando Mosca of Pescocostanzo, while the chapel on the right of the entrance, dedicated to San Costanzo, preserves a relic of the saint, which reached Scanno in the eighteenth century.

What see

The Church of San Rocco and Madonna del Carmine has an fresco on an external wall in which San Cristoforo is depicted.

The Church of Sant'Eustachio, which is the church of the patron of Scanno, has various sculptures inside, including Sant'Agata, Sant'Apollonia, Faith and Hope, Santa Lucia, Santa Barbara, as well as that of Sant 'Eustace.

The Church of Our Lady of Constantinople, located next to Piazza San Rocco, preserves inside, placed above the main altar, a wonderful fresco representing a Madonna and Child, seated on the throne, with a background of golden flowers that recalls the Sienese art of the fifteenth century.
