Verucchio (Emilia Romagna): what to see

post-title

What to see in Verucchio, an itinerary including the main monuments and places of interest, including Rocca Malatestiana, Piazza Malatesta, Collegiate Church and Romanesque church.

Tourist information

Located in a privileged position between sea and hills, 18 km from Rimini, Verucchio is part of the Valle del Marecchia Mountain Community.

The first human settlements in the area date back to a long time ago, as evidenced by the archaeological finds that brought to light over 600 burials, including funerary furnishings and dating back to the period between the tenth and seventh centuries BC.

The Malatesta Fortress, also known as Rocca del Sasso and dating back to the twelfth century, has been modified and enlarged several times over the centuries.

Of this fortified complex it is worth seeing the Great Hall, the male and the dungeons.

What see

The Rocca del Passarello, with the adjoining door, constitutes the second fortified nucleus of Verucchio, above which in 1600 the Monastery of the Nuns of Santa Chiara was erected, worthy of note is the magnificent reconstruction of the ancient door, which leads into Verucchio skirting the walls of San Giorgio, which remained largely intact together with several defensive bastions.

The seventeenth-century Giungi palace from 1600 overlooks Piazza Malatesta, located in the historic center, with a beautiful portal, characteristic windows and other typical architectural elements of that era.

The Collegiate Church of San Martino, which was erected in 1863, following the project of the architects Antonio Tondini and Filippo Morolli, has an interior containing valuable works, including two wooden crucifixes of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, as well as a seventeenth-century canvas by the painter Francesco Nagli, depicting San Martino who gives the cloak to the poor man.

The Romanesque parish church of Sant'Antonio, dating back to 990, is one of the oldest buildings in Verucchio, which can be reached by following the road that descends from the town towards the valley to the hamlet of Villa Verucchio.

Among the main events, the Malatesta feasts should be mentioned, able to create an evocative atmosphere that brings the historic center back to the medieval period, with the holding of parades, staging of banquets and court dinners, as well as knightly jousting.
