Tourist information

Returning to the district of Columbia, Washington is located on the left bank of the Potomac River, in the central eastern part of the USA, between the state of Maryland in the north and the state of Virginia in the south, about 370 km from New York.

In 1790 the American Congress decided to build the new capital Washington.

The "District of Columbia" was established and, in order not to favor any of the already existing cities, it was decided to build a new one in land specifically intended for this purpose which were in an intermediate position in order to satisfy the states of both the north and the south.

Pierre Charles L’Enfant is the name of the architect who took care of the urban planning of the city but, as at the beginning of the implementation it came into conflict with the commission that supervised the work, he was fired.

However, the members of the commission were already in possession of a copy of the drawings, had them reviewed by topographers Andrew and Joseph Ellicott and the project was thus carried out.

Washington is home to the United States federal government, major government institutions, various ministries, federal agencies and US international organizations.
