Agerola (Campania): what to see

post-title

What to see in Agerola, a town in Campania located on the Amalfi coast in the province of Naples, which are the main places and monuments of interest not to be missed.

Tourist information

Located in a basin on the southern side of the Lattari mountains, 600 meters above sea level, Agerola overlooks the Gulf of Salerno.

Thanks to the panoramic position, which is an excellent point of view on the Sorrento peninsula, and to the largely unspoiled nature, Agerola has become the favorite destination for those who are looking for a quiet place to relax.

This was precisely the reason why famous people, including Francesco Crispi and Benedetto Croce, came to spend periods of rest here.

Agerola is the oldest town on the Amalfi Coast, in fact the first traces of human settlements are very remote, as evidenced by the extensive necropolis dating back to the ninth century.

During the Roman period, there were many rustic villas in the area, so some scholars believe that the land was widely cultivated, given the privileged position.

What see

Among the main places to visit include the remains of the Lauritano Castle, built by the Republic of Amalfi as a work with sighting and defense functions against the frequent incursions of the Saracens.

From the terrace in front of the castle it is possible to admire a suggestive panorama of the Amalfi coast, extended up to the Gulf of Salerno.

Also worth seeing is the church of San Matteo Apostolo, dating back to 1580 and built over an older church.

Inside this building of worship, which has three naves and has three apses, there is a baptismal font from the sixteenth century and a beautiful carved fifteenth-century crucifix.

The wooden ceiling, which dates back to 1717, contains a canvas by De Majo, depicting the Martyrdom of San Matteo and dating back to 1745.
