San Damiano de Veuster
Damiano de Veuster was born in Tremelo on January 3, 1840 and died in Molokai on April 15, 1889, of Belgian origin he was a missionary and presbyter, also known as Father Damien for his membership in the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts.
He had seven brothers, two of whom became priests of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus, while two sisters entered the convent becoming nuns.
Giuseppe, who was the penultimate, at first helped his father but then, at 19, he also made himself a priest, calling himself Brother Damiano.
His brother Pamphile also entered the same congregation, who was ordained a priest in 1863, renouncing to go on a mission because he was ill.
Damiano then left in his place, although he was not yet a priest.
The destination assigned to him was that of the Sandwich Islands, later named Hawaii, where he was able to complete his studies and become a presbyter in 1864.
In 1873 he went to the Lazaretto island of Molokai, where leprosy patients were exiled from the government, in that place he remained until his death.
In 1885 he was infected with the disease, dying within a month.
Only in 1936 his body was moved to Belgium.
After being beatified in Brussels in 1995, under the pontificate of John Paul II, he was made a saint on 11 October 2009 in St. Peter's Square in Rome by Pope Benedict XVI.
