San Domenico of Guzmán

He was born in 1270 in Caleruega in Castile, by Felice di Guzmán and Giovanna d’Aza, although there is no certain evidence that he descends from the noble Guzmán family.

After an initial education received by an uncle archpriest, at 14 he was sent to Palencia where he attended, for about 10 years, regular courses in liberal arts and theology.

Finding himself in close contact with the miseries caused by the constant wars and famines, he demonstrated an exceptional charity towards the poor, arriving in 1191 to sell his precious parchments to feed them.

After completing his studies, at the age of 24 he entered the regular canons of the cathedral of Osma and was ordained a priest.

The experiences of regular life, choral liturgy and contemplation completed his formation.

He founded the Order of Preachers, officially approved by Pope Honorius III.

He died in Bologna on August 6, 1221.
