post-title

What to see in Bassano del Grappa, itinerary including the main monuments and places of interest, including Ponte degli Alpini, Museo Remondini and Museo della Grappa.

Tourist information

Bassano del Grappa, also known as the city of the Alpini, stands at the foot of Monte Grappa on the banks of the Brenta River in Veneto.

A city of art rich in history and culture, of which the Pieve di Santa Maria, dating back to 998, and the Castle, form the original nucleus.

Over the centuries the history of the village was marked first by the Vicenza and Padua dominations, then by that of the Republic of Venice, which lasted for four centuries, from 1404 to 1797, characterized by a remarkable development of trade and the arts.

It was at that time that the family of Dal Ponte painters, originally from Bassano, of which the greatest exponent was Jacopo Dal Ponte, better known as Jacopo Bassano, made numerous paintings.

The Civic Museum, which is located inside the former convent of San Francesco, displays an important collection of works from the prestigious dynasty of painters.

A section of the museum is also dedicated to the great artist Antonio Canova.

In the eighteenth century, the city of Bassano was famous in Europe in the printing and book sector, thanks to the Remondini printing house, which belonged to a family that worked in this sector for almost two centuries.

What see

The Remondini Museum, located in Palazzo Sturm, illustrates all aspects of this production.

In the palace there is also the Ceramics Museum, which boasts objects of considerable artistic tradition.

Another significant period for the city is unfortunately linked to the war events that occurred on Monte Grappa during the First World War, when Bassano deserved the name of City of the Alpini.

The famous Ponte Vecchio, better known as Ponte degli Alpini or Ponte di Bassano, is a covered structure made of wood to a design by Andrea Palladio in 1569.

Built for the first time in the thirteenth century, the bridge has been destroyed several times over the centuries, the last of which dates back to the bombing of the Second World War.

In 1948 it was faithfully rebuilt with funds raised by the Alpine troops. Among the typical products of Bassano we cannot forget the renowned Bassano grappa.

By visiting the Grappa Museum, which stands in front of the Ponte Vecchio, we can learn about the history and the procedure used to obtain this type of distillate.
