St. Joseph of Leonessa

Eufrasio Desideri, later Giuseppe, born in Leonessa on 8 January 1556, is famous for having followed the example of Saint Francis to the letter, imposing a life marked by a hard penance and abstinence, at the Convent of the Prisons located above Assisi, belonging to the Order of Capuchin Friars Minor.

He spent most of his life preaching in Constantinople, attempting to induce the Sultan to convert, who had him crucified for one foot and one hand.

After spending three days of terrible torture, Giuseppe was pardoned and managed to return to Italy, where he carried out his missionary activity in Umbria.

He was then hit by a tumor and died on 4 December 1612 in Amatrice.

Pope Clement XII beatified him on 22 June 1737 and was made holy on 29 June 1746 by Pope Benedict XIV.

On January 12, 1952, Pope Pius XII proclaimed him patron of the missions in Turkey.
