Also known as Forio d'Ischia, Forio is a town located on the promontory of the western coast of the island of Ischia.

Thermal springs have been exploited in the area since ancient times, in particular the Romans exploited the waters of Citara, where there was a beach dedicated to the gods Venus and Apollo.


Along the coast there are numerous watchtowers, which in the past had had a defensive function against the incursions of the Saracens, including the Torrione dating back to 1480 and well preserved.

The historic center is characterized by narrow streets along which there are the shops of local painters and potters.

Among the places to visit is the Church of Santa Maria del Soccorso with the square in front of which you can admire a splendid panorama.


Built overlooking the sea around the mid-fourteenth century in the Byzantine-Greek style, it was an Augustinian convent.

What see

The present-day church, which dates back to 1864, has a white facade, with a staircase covered with eighteenth-century majolica, an interior with a single nave, including side chapels, apse and a statue of a sixteenth-century crucifix, to which thaumaturgical properties are attributed .

In the upper part of Forio there is the Basilica of San Vito, dating back to before 1306 and subsequently enlarged starting from the seventeenth century.


The church has an interior with three naves, decorated in stucco by Francesco Starace, also there are various paintings and sculptures, of which the most important is a statue of San Vito, made of silver and gilded copper and dating back to 1787.

Among the natural beauty there are several beaches, including those of San Francesco di Paola, Chiaia and Citara, including the famous thermal park of the Giardini Poseidon and the bay of Sorgeto, equipped with comfortable natural pools of hot water in the sea, inserted between the rocks of volcanic origin.

Also worth seeing are the La Mortella gardens, unique in their kind, which were created by Susanna Walton, wife of the English composer William Walton.
