Gemona del Friuli (Friuli Venezia Giulia): what to see

post-title

What to see in Gemona del Friuli, itinerary including the main monuments and places of interest, including Palazzo Comunale, Duomo, Museo della Pieve and Tesoro del Duomo.

Tourist information

Locality of Roman origin, Gemona del Friuli in medieval times was subjected to the Lombard duchy and later to Aquileia, as one of the most important towns of the patriarchate.

After passing to Venice, it was given in fiefdom to the lordship of the Savorgnan.

Damaged several times by earthquakes, it was almost completely razed to the ground since that of 1976.

The Palazzo Comunale is a beautiful example of a Renaissance building with a portico and three-mullioned balconies.

What see

Going along the portico via Giuseppe Bini, you reach the Gothic cathedral of the thirteenth century, characterized by a remarkable facade comprising reliefs, including the one representing the Nativity, three rose windows and a portal.

In the interior with three naves with side chapels, valuable works of art and a treasure are preserved, which includes valuable sacred furnishings.

The Museo della Pieve and the Tesoro del Duomo are housed in the old rectory, a building built in 1360 on commission from the parish priest Giovanni de 'Recalcatis.

In the internal rooms dedicated to the exhibition, works of painting and sculpture made by local authors in the period between the twelfth and nineteenth centuries are preserved, as well as sacred furnishings, recovered from local churches destroyed by the 1976 earthquake.

The Treasury of the Cathedral houses some of the best creations of the fifteenth century Friulian goldsmithery, works of Baroque, neoclassical and modern taste, as well as a valuable collection of liturgical vestments, embroidery and lace.
