Sant’Angela Merici
Born in Desenzano del Garda on March 21, 1474 and died in Brescia on January 27, 1540, Angela Merici was an Italian religious, sanctified by Pope Pius VII on May 24, 1807.
During a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, carried out a short time before, she was struck by temporary blindness, a period during which the only thing she could see was the vision, in a dream, of a staircase that rose to the sky and whose steps were occupied entirely of young girls, this made her understand what was the mission to which God called her.
Upon returning to Brescia, Angela put the vision into practice, dedicating herself to the material and spiritual assistance of the young women.
His idea of opening schools for girls was considered revolutionary at the time, since education was a privilege reserved almost exclusively for boys only.
In 1535 he founded the Compagnia di Sant’Orsola, a congregation of religious who did not have a particular uniform capable of distinguishing them.
Angela died in Brescia in 1540, carrying in her heart the joy of being able to achieve what she had dreamed of, but only after her death was the Rule of her congregation printed.
