Saints Marcellinus, Peter and Erasmus
Died in Rome in 304, Marcellinus and Peter, who were respectively a presbyter and an exorcist in life, are revered as saints by the Catholic and Orthodox churches as martyrs, for having been tortured and killed at the time of the persecutions of Diocletian.
Pope Siricius built a basilica in the same place where they were buried, called Basilica dei Santi Marcellino e Pietro.
Their relics were sent to France by Pope Gregory IV and were then transferred by Eginardo, who was an adviser to Charlemagne, to the abbey of Seligenstadt on the Main in Mainz.
A small bone fragment of San Marcellino is found in the church of San Giovanni Battista in Monteodorisio.
Saints Marcellinus and Peter were very popular already in the first centuries of Christianity, to such an extent that their names are mentioned in an ancient Eucharistic prayer dating back to the pontificate of Pope Vigilius, which took place between 537 and 555.
