St. Robert of Newminster

Robert of Newminster was born in the county of York near Gargrave, around the end of the eleventh century.

When he returned to England, after attending university in Paris, he was ordained a priest and assigned to him the parish in his hometown Gargrave.

Having a remarkable predisposition for the contemplative life, he decided to enter the Benedictine abbey of Whitby, later he joined a group of monks, led by the prior Riccardo, who had founded a community at Fountains, located in the northern part of the diocese of York.

After four years a new abbey was founded in Newminster in Northumbria, whose direction was assigned to Roberto.

Subsequently, the community expanded further with the birth of three other monasteries in Pipewell, Roche and Sawley.

Roberto distinguished himself for the gift of prophecy, in a life characterized by austerity and mortification by his own choice.

During a Mass he heard that a ship had sunk a short distance away and immediately sent his monks to give aid to the survivors and to bury the deceased with dignity.

In 1159 he died after falling ill, provided with the comfort of his confreres and in serenity for having had time to receive extreme unction.
