post-title

What to see in Krk, an itinerary including the main places of interest on this island in Croatia, including Malinska, Punat and Baska.

Tourist information

Greater than the Adriatic Sea and Croatia, Krk is located in the Kvarner Gulf, about 120 km from Trieste, and is part of the archipelago of the Kvarner Islands, a bridge connects it to the mainland.

The territory of the island of Krk, mainly hilly, reaches its maximum altitude with Mount Obzova, with 568 meters.

The island is covered with lush vegetation that goes down to the sea, where the rugged coast offers numerous bays and coves with beautiful pebble, sand or rocky beaches.

On the island are the Jezero and Ponikva lakes, as well as the Veli-Dobrinjski Potok, Vretenica and Vela rika rivers.

After crossing the Krk bridge, the first resort is Omisalj, whose historic center is located on top of the hill, overlooking a quiet bay.

Continuing along the coast are Njivice and Malinska.

Njivice, located in the bay of Belikamik, is a tourist resort characterized by pebbly, terraced beaches, with rocks and natural coves.

In Malinska, which in the past was a simple fishing village, there is a characteristic waterfront path, called the way of Paradise, which leads from Malinska to Njivice.

Near Malinska it is possible to visit the town of Porat, where there is a Franciscan convent and a museum, which collects sacred furnishings and everyday objects.

The beaches in this area are pebbly, there are also natural coves inserted between the rocks in the shade of Lecci.

What see

Krk, which is the capital and most important city of the island, is surrounded by imposing walls that enclose historic buildings, various shops with local crafts, markets, restaurants and net-cafés.

Punat, which is located about 9 km from Krk, is a neat-looking town with the most well-equipped port on the island, where you can rent boats and rent berths for mooring.

In front of Punat there is the islet of Ko Ljun, reachable by boat from the port of Punat.

The Ko Ljun islet is an interesting destination, as it houses the Franciscan convent of Santa Maria, the church of the Annunciation of Mary and a small museum that is worth visiting.

Baska is located at the south-eastern end of the island, its name in Italian is Bescanuova.

This is the most popular resort, at a tourist level, thanks to its beautiful sandy and pebble beach, Vela Plaza, and the quiet coves that are located along the south-west coast, reachable by taxi-boat.

The distance between the Krk bridge, at the entrance to the island, and Baska is about 45 km.

From the cultural point of view, in the nearby village of Jurandvor, at the ancient Church of Saint Lucia, the famous Baska table was found, the oldest Croatian script made in the Glagolitic alphabet.

The original is found in the museum of Zagreb, while a copy is present in this church.

In the south-west of the island, about 8 km as the crow flies from Baska if you walk on a path, but by car you have to do about 30 km, there is Stare Baska, or the old town, which is a small and quiet village characterized by very beautiful beaches but with demanding access.

Continuing the tour, in the eastern part of the island, there is Vrbnik, a castle town perched on a rock, at an altitude of 48 meters.

Excellent wines are produced here, including Vrbnicka Zlahtina, made from a renowned autochthonous grape variety from the island of Krk, which excels only if grown on the Vrbnik plain, to be combined with tasty typical local products.

Another attraction on the island of Krk is the Biserujka cave, located in the town of Rùdina above the Slivanjska bay, in the northern part of the island.

Its discovery dates back more than 100 years, it is about 110 meters long and maintains a constant temperature all year round between 10 ° C and 13 ° C.

The electrification of the cave allowed visitors to admire all its beauties, represented by underground galleries, stalactites, stalagmites and columns.
