Saint Angel of Jerusalem

Born in Jerusalem on March 2, 1185 and died in Licata on May 5, 1225, Angelo was a Carmelite friar who died as a martyr.

Belonging to a family of Jews converted to Christianity, Angelo, together with his twin brother Giovanni, who was orphaned by his parents, entered the Convent of Mount Carmel, run by a religious community that arose at the beginning of Christianity and known as the Order of the Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel .

This order gave itself in that period a new rule, composed by Albert of Jerusalem around 1214, which operated a transformation in the life of the religious, going from contemplative to beggar.

Angelo was ordained a priest in the Carmel convent when he was twenty-five years old.

In 1218 he was commissioned to go to Rome, to illustrate the new rule to Pope Honorius III and request its approval, which he obtained in 1226.

Having remained in Rome for some time, carrying out evangelization activities with public sermons, he was sent to Sicily to undertake a work of contrast against the Cathar heresy.

Angelo died tragically, in fact, after convincing the cohabitant of the noble Berengario to abandon him, because he was related to him, he was attacked in the church of Saints Filippo and Giacomo in Licata and seriously wounded with a sword by Beregario himself.

Angelo did not make it and died a few days later forgiving his aggressor first and urging the people to do the same.

He was buried in the same church where he was attacked.
