Tourist information

Located in the region of the American Great Lakes, along the river of the same name and in the center of an extensive industrial area, Michigan takes its name from the lake of the same name and is considered, internationally, as the home of the automotive industry.

Tourism is also highly developed, with Traverse City, Mackinac Island and the entire Upper Peninsula among the most popular destinations.

Michigan's coastline is the largest after Alaska.

The geographical conformation sees the state of Michigan made up of two peninsulas joined by the Strait of Mackinac.

To the south are the state of Ohio and Indiana.

The region of the upper peninsula, called the Upper Peninsula, is largely covered by forests while the Porcupine Mountains, which are the oldest in North America, although not reaching high heights, act as a watershed between the basin of Lake Superior and that of Lake Michigan.

The lower peninsula called Lower Peninsula represents two thirds of the entire surface of the state with a predominantly flat territory.

Lakes, wetlands and rugged coasts abound in both peninsulas.

The rivers are small, in rare cases navigable, and among them the main ones are Au Sable, Thunder Bay, Cheboygan and Saginaw which flow into Lake Huron.

The Ontonagon and Tahquamenon rivers feed Lake Superior while St. Joseph, Kalamazoo, Grand and Escanaba flow into Lake Michigan.
