Obidos (Portugal): what to see

post-title

What to see in Obidos, itinerary including the main monuments and places of interest, including the castle walls with their doors, the Church of Santa Maria and the Sanctuary of Signor Gesù della Pietra.

Tourist information

Enclosed within the walls of a twelfth century castle, Obidos is considered one of the best preserved medieval cities in Portugal.

In the period between the thirteenth and nineteenth centuries, Obidos formed part of the dowry that the Portuguese kings gave to their brides on the occasion of their wedding.

This donation was received with great enthusiasm by future queens, given the undisputed beauty of the place.

Of the four gates opened in the past in the ancient walls, the one located to the south is the main one.

What see

After crossing the corridor, Obidos shows itself with its countless monuments, stately homes, winding streets and particular corners that recall times gone by.

Among the monuments that deserves to be seen are the Church of Santa Maria, whose origins date back to the period of the Visigothic dominion, the Church of San Pietro, with its relevant baroque altarpiece, and the Church of Santiago, formerly the chapel of the castle.

On the other side of the walls, you can see the Sanctuary of Signor Gesù della Pietra, a very popular temple where, according to tradition, many miraculous healings took place.
