Blessed Bonaventura of Potenza
Carlo Antonio Gerardo Lavanga was born in 1651 in Potenza, in Basilicata, to poor but highly faithful parents.
Entering the Order of Conventual Minors at the age of fifteen, he distinguished himself for his austerity of life, for obedience and for total self-denial.
He changed his name to fra Bonaventura, to testify to a radical change of life.
The period of preparation for the priesthood passed between Aversa and Maddaloni, in environments where he had disagreements with his superiors because of the failure to find the authentic spirit of the Franciscan message.
In the convent of Amalfi, under the spiritual guidance of Father Domenico Girardelli, he managed to appease his anxieties, humbly placing himself at the service of the Lord and following the orders of his superiors.
He was assiduous in preaching the Word of God and tireless in the ministry of confessions, he distinguished himself above all for his ability to comfort prisoners and those sentenced to death.
He died in 1711 in Ravello, near Amalfi, later he was beatified under the pontificate of Pius VI.
