Queluz (Portugal): what to see

post-title

What to see in Queluz, itinerary including the main places of interest, including the Royal Palace, characterized by remarkable internal environments and magnificent gardens.

Tourist information

In the surroundings of Queluz there is the Royal Palace, an ancient residence of the Lusitanian kings, built in the eighteenth century on a project by the architects Mateus Vicente and Jean Baptiste Robillon.

It is nicknamed the Portuguese Versailles, due to the evident French influence in outlining its external forms and the subdivision of the internal environments, but above all for the beauty of the gardens, which are practically perfectly maintained.

In this regard, the Garden of Neptune stands out, divided from the rest by a balustrade including statues made by Manuel Alves and Silvestre de Faria.

As for the interior, the Throne Room, in Louis XV style, intended for long music and dance sessions, deserves to be carefully viewed.

What see

Also noteworthy is the Sala degli Ambasciatori, characterized by walls covered with fine fabrics, marble and mirrors.

The King's Room, also known as Don Quijote's room, is decorated with paintings depicting the various stages of the singular life of the Spanish knight.

The Sala del Consiglio di Stato stands out for its ceiling, frescoed with allegorical subjects relating to the time.

The Casa de Mangas has walls covered with azulejos, depicting scenes from the Portuguese maritime enterprises, while the Sala delle Merende contains remarkable paintings from the eighteenth century.

Other rooms that deserve to be seen are the Oratory of the princesses Maria José and Maria Dorotea, the Sala di Lanternem, with the paintings of King Michele I, and the Sala della Musica, with the three magnificent Venetian crystal candelabra.
