San Francisco (United States): what to see

post-title

What to see in San Francisco, itinerary of the main places of interest in this northern California city, including cable car, Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz Island.

Tourist information

With the Pacific Ocean in the west and San Francisco Bay in the east, San Francisco extends over a hilly area with very steep roads and characteristic electric trams, cable cars, that run through them.

Cable Cars are the particular funicular tramway network in operation in the city of San Francisco.

Lombard Street, located in the Russian Hill district and reachable by cable car, is a very picturesque street characterized by narrow switchbacks, with steps and flower beds placed on its sides.

The city is connected to the continent through some bridges, the most famous of which is the Golden Gate Bridge, which joins the two banks at the mouth of the bay.

The Bay Bridge connects San Francisco to Oakland.

San Francisco is a multiethnic and nonconformist city, with a slower pace of life than other cities in the United States.

What see

Union Square is the heart of the city, while Chinatown is the neighborhood where one of the largest Chinese communities in the world lives.

From Pier 39, a pier that juts out into the bay near Fisherman's Wharf, a popular tourist area that was once a fishing port, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the city.

Another spectacular vantage point is the terrace of the Coit Tower, located above Telegraph Hill.

North Beach is the Italian neighborhood with excellent bars and restaurants.

Golden Gate Park is a huge park that goes all the way to the ocean.

Also in the bay is the island of Alcatraz which, used as a maximum security prison from 1933 to 1963, is now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

In front of Tiburon, a pretty town on the bay, is Angel Island which, from 1910 to 1940, was a detention camp for immigrants waiting for an entry visa, while today it is a park for pleasant walks.
