Karol Józef Wojtyła was born on May 18, 1920 in Wadowice, a town in Poland located about fifty kilometers from Krakow.

He was the youngest of the three children of the couple Karol Wojtyła and Emilia Kaczorowska, who died in 1929.

His older brother Edmund, who practiced the profession of doctor, passed away in 1932, while his father, a non-commissioned officer in the army, died in 1941.

Sister Olga had died before he was even born.

He was baptized on 20 June 1920 at the parish church of Wadowice, at 9 years old he received First Communion and at 18 years of age the sacrament of Confirmation.

In 1938, after finishing his studies at the Marcin Wadowita high school in Wadowice, he enrolled at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow.

When the university was closed by the Nazis in 1939, the young Karol had to go to work first in a quarry and then at Solvay, a chemical factory, to earn a living, thus avoiding being deported to Germany.

In 1942, feeling the priestly vocation, he began to attend training courses at the underground seminary in Krakow, directed by the then archbishop of Krakow, Cardinal Adam Stefan Sapieha.

During the same period he was part of the unauthorized group that promoted the Rapsodico Theater.

After the war, he resumed his studies in the major seminary in Krakow, which had been reopened and in the Faculty of Theology of the Jagiellonian University.
