post-title

What to see in Alfedena, itinerary including the main monuments and places of interest, including Campo Consolino necropolis, civic museum and castle tower.

Tourist information

Located at an altitude of 914 meters, Alfedena is a small village located in Abruzzo in the province of L'Aquila, belonging to the Mountain Community of Alto Sangro, the Cinque Miglia Plateau and the Abruzzo National Park.

Located on the two banks of the Rio Torto, at the base of the Meta and Monte Greco massifs, it is frequented by tourists and holidaymakers especially during the whole summer season.

It can be reached by taking the regional road 83, which also represents its main road, since it completely crosses it.

With a typically Apennine climate, summers are mild in Alfedena, while winters are particularly cold.

In fact, the area is periodically affected by the influence of cold currents from the north east, which can frequently cause intense snow phenomena, alternating with sirocco winds from the south west, which in turn can cause prolonged periods without snowfall during the winter season.

What see

The inhabited center of Alfedena is located in the area where the Campo Consolino necropolis is located, dating back to protohistoric times, where experts believe there are about twelve thousand tombs, of which only a few actually explored and dating from the sixth to the third century BC.

The finds found following the archaeological excavations in the necropolis are kept in the Museo Civico De Nino.

Over the town dominates the magnificent octagonal tower which is part of the Castle where Prince Caracciolo di Cellamare resided.

Very interesting to visit is the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, dating back to the thirteenth century, but subsequently restored several times, which is characterized by having a facade inspired by the Romanesque style.

Every year, on the second Sunday of July, St. Peter martyr, city patron, is celebrated with the traditional patronal feast.
