Santa Bernardette Soubirous

Born in Lourdes in 1844 into a very poor family, on February 11, 1858, at the age of fourteen, and later on for another 18 times, of which the last occurred on July 16 of the same year, Bernardette Soubirous had apparitions of the Virgin Mary in the cave of Massabielle.

In the apparition of 25 March 1858, the Lady reveals to Bernadette that she is the Immaculate Conception.

Pope Pius IX four years earlier had established that the Immaculate Conception of Mary was a dogma of faith, but this Bernadette could not have known.

A few years later, the pastoral letter signed in 1862 by the bishop of Tarbes, after carrying out an in-depth investigation, definitively consecrated Lourdes as an international Marian shrine.

The clergy and the people of the time were disoriented in front of a peasant without culture who said she had the exclusive vision of a beautiful lady who spoke to her.

This event complicated her life a lot within the community in which she lived and had to retire, on July 7, 1866, inside the monastery of Saint Gilard, mother house of the Sisters of Charity in Nevers, where she remained for thirteen years.

Affected by asthma, tuberculosis and knee bone cancer, Bernadette died on April 16, 1879, which was an Easter Wednesday, when she was 35 years old.

Its still intact body is kept in Nevers, near the chapel of the mother house.
