Saint Francis of Paola

Francesco was born in Paola, a town near Cosenza, on March 27, 1416 from Giacomo Martolilla and Vienna from Fuscaldo.

Being now in old age to have children, the parents considered the birth of their first child due to the intercession of St. Francis, who had prayed so much, and for this reason they decided to give him the name of the Saint of Assisi.

When he was still a child, Francesco contracted a serious eye infection and the parents once again asked for the intervention of San Francesco, so that he would intercede for them towards God in order to obtain the healing of their baby.

In case of recovery, they made a vow that they would have made Francis wear the habit of the Franciscan friars for a whole year, in order to help him find his vocation, and the disease resolved without a trace.

After a year of trial in the convent, Francis left the convent, continuing his vocational research through travel and pilgrimages.

At one point he chose to live a hermit's life, retreating to Paola on land belonging to his family.

In that place he could devote himself to contemplation, mortifying his body and arousing great admiration among the villagers.

In a short time many people who wanted to place themselves under his spiritual direction began to arrive at his hermitage.

Other hermitages were founded and the Paolan hermit congregation also known as the Order of the Least was born.

The approval of the new religious order was facilitated by the great fame of thaumaturge that Francis had earned over time, working wonders for everyone.

The interest in the miracles he was able to accomplish also involved King Louis XI of France, who was in that infirmary.

The sovereign asked Pope Sixtus IV if he could get Francesco da Paola to his bedside.

With enormous sacrifice, Francesco with a great spirit of obedience left the hermitage to settle at the court of Louis XI, who greatly appreciated the beautiful gesture and, although he had not obtained to be healed, he wanted from that moment a great good to Francesco, opening a period of favorable relations between the papacy and the French court.

He remained France for the next twenty five years, as a man of God and reformer of religious life.

On April 2, 1507 he died near Tours.
