San Raimondo Nonnato
Raimondo Nonnato, born in Portell in 1200 or 1204 and died in Cardona on August 31, 1240, was a Spanish religious who belonged to the Mercedary Order who is today venerated as a saint by the Catholic Church.
Raimondo was nicknamed unborn because he was extracted from the body of the mother who died the day before, by means of a cutting weapon.
The hypothesis that it was a relative of the noble Cardona family who gave birth to the child using his sword is credited.
In his youth, Raimondo was a shepherd, bringing his flock to a chapel where the Virgin Mary was venerated.
Later, having heard of Pietro Nolasco and his search for men willing to found an "Order of the Knights of Mercede" with him, to free the Christians captured by Muslims, Raimondo decided to make himself available for this project.
Become a mercedary, he undertook several trips to free the prisoners, including that of Valencia, during which he freed 233 slaves and that of Algiers with whom he freed another 150.
In Algiers he offered to be jailed in exchange for a prisoner.
According to tradition, the guards, since he continued to preach and convert Muslims even in prison, pierced his lips and closed them with a padlock, so that he could no longer speak.
Raimondo was later redeemed by his own Order, returning to Barcelona in 1239.
He died shortly after in 1240, in the castle of Cardona, where he had stopped during a trip to Rome.Recommended readings
