Campo Imperatore is a place of significant interest for winter sports enthusiasts, thanks to the many possibilities it offers.

It is a vast plateau, of glacial and alluvial karst origin, located at an altitude of about 1800 m in the province of L'Aquila


In addition, the area is among the best equipped in central Italy and, thanks to the abundance of snowfall, it has become one of the major Apennine ski centers, where there are numerous ski slopes with different degrees of difficulty, including the track of Aquila Bianca where various ski races are held.

What see

In the Campo Imperatore square there is the historic hotel where, in 1943, Mussolini was temporarily imprisoned.

There is also one of the major astronomical observatories in Italy, as well as an interesting Botanical Garden.


During the summer Campo Imperatore offers a beautiful green landscape, suitable to satisfy the desires of walkers immersed in nature, thanks to the wide choice of paths and itineraries to be covered on foot, by bike or on horseback.

Among these routes, the most famous is the Ippovia del Gran Sasso, an annular route with areas equipped for regenerating stops.

Furthermore, with a steep path that starts from the hotel, it is possible to reach the Cresta della Portella, where the Duca degli Abruzzi Refuge is located.
