On 9 December 1531, which fell on a Saturday, an Indian farmer named Juan Diego, while going to the morning Mass, before dawn, near the Tepeyac hill north of Mexico City, heard a melodious song like little birds, and a very sweet voice calling him from the top of the hill: Juanito! Juan Dieguito!
Then Juan Diego climbed to the top of the Tepeyac and saw a young Lady in a shining dress who, inviting him to approach, said to him: "Know, my poor beloved son, that I am the perfect ever Virgin Mary, the Mother of the most true and only God, of the One who is the author of life, the creator of men, the one in whom all things exist, the Lord of Heaven, the master of the earth ".
“I long for my little sacred house to be built in this place, a temple to be erected, in which I want to make my love, my compassion, my help, my protection manifest, because in truth I am yours Merciful Mother: yours, of all those who inhabit this land and of all those men who love me, invoke me, seek me and put all their trust in me ... "Then he told him to go to the bishop to tell him to erect a temple in his honor at the foot of the hill.
Juan Diego went to the Bishop but he did not believe him, then he returned to the apparition site where he found the Lady who told him to return to the bishop again.
So it was that Jan Diego met the bishop for the second time and he asked him for a sign that would prove the truth of his story.
When Juan Diego returned to the hill he found the Virgin Mary who, after listening to him, told him to return the next morning to bring the requested sign to the bishop.
The next day, however, Juan Diego was unable to return to the apparition site because he had to assist his uncle, Juan Bernardino, who was seriously ill.
The next morning, December 12, Juan Diego went out in search of a priest for his uncle who appeared dying, but along the way the Virgin Mary appeared to him equally, for the fourth and last time, telling him that his uncle was already healed. Then she invited him to go up the hill to pick some flowers.
Juan Diego found beautiful Castile flowers, which bloomed out of season in an arid stone, then picked up a bouquet in his cloak, called the tilma, and went to bring them to the bishop, who welcomed him.
When Juan Diego offered the flowers to the bishop and opened his cloak, they scattered on the ground and the image of the Virgin Mary miraculously appeared on the fabric of the tilma, as we see it today preserved in the Shrine of Guadalupe built in his honor.

The image printed on the fabric is 143 cm, with a slightly dark complexion, the features of the face are tending to mestizo, it is surrounded by sunrays, it has the moon under its feet and is supported by a small angel, whose wings are adorned with long red, white and green feathers.
Under a royal blue-green cloak covered with golden stars, the Virgin wears a pink tunic covered with golden flowers and tightened above her waist by a dark purple belt which, among the Aztecs, was the sign of recognition of pregnant women who, in this case is interpreted as the sign of Mary's divine motherhood.
